Background of the Study

Corruption in Nigerian local governments has long been a challenge, with issues such as misallocation of public funds, embezzlement, and fraudulent practices affecting the effectiveness of public service delivery. Local governments, which are essential in providing services at the grassroots level, have often been plagued by corruption, undermining development initiatives and eroding public trust. In recent years, forensic accounting has been recognized as a powerful tool in combating financial misconduct and ensuring accountability in public institutions.

Forensic accounting is a specialized area of accounting that involves the application of investigative techniques to detect financial fraud, mismanagement, and corruption. In Nigerian local governments, forensic accountants play an essential role in uncovering financial irregularities and providing the necessary evidence to pursue legal action. This study explores the use of forensic accounting in reducing corruption in Ekiti State's local governments, evaluating the effectiveness of forensic accounting practices in identifying and addressing financial misconduct at the local government level.

Statement of the Problem

Corruption remains a significant challenge in Nigerian local governments, leading to a mismanagement of public funds and hindering development at the grassroots level. While forensic accounting has been implemented in various sectors to detect financial misconduct, its application in local governments remains insufficiently explored. The effectiveness of forensic accounting in reducing corruption at the local government level, specifically in Ekiti State, has not been comprehensively examined. This study seeks to evaluate the role and effectiveness of forensic accounting in mitigating corruption in Ekiti State’s local governments.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of forensic accounting in reducing corruption in Ekiti State local governments.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of forensic accounting techniques in detecting and addressing financial misconduct in Ekiti State.

  3. To identify the challenges faced in implementing forensic accounting in local governments in Ekiti State.

Research Questions

  1. How does forensic accounting contribute to reducing corruption in Ekiti State local governments?

  2. What forensic accounting techniques are employed to detect and prevent corruption in Ekiti State local governments?

  3. What challenges do Ekiti State local governments face in implementing forensic accounting to reduce corruption?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Forensic accounting significantly reduces corruption in Ekiti State local governments.

  2. Forensic accounting techniques effectively detect and address financial misconduct in Ekiti State local governments.

  3. Ekiti State local governments face challenges in fully implementing forensic accounting to reduce corruption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on Ekiti State and its local government areas, evaluating the use of forensic accounting in combating corruption. The research will cover a period from 2015 to 2025. Limitations may include difficulty in accessing sensitive financial data from local government sources and possible resistance from local government officials to disclose corruption-related information.
